Define the T-shirt program first

Define the program before contacting manufacturers. Provide T-shirt styles, target fits, measurements, fabric direction, colorways, size range, quantity, artwork, labels, packaging, destination, and desired timing. Mark which requirements are fixed and where you want proposals. A complete brief allows suppliers in different countries to answer the same questions and makes their quotations easier to compare.

Check fabric sourcing capability

Check whether the manufacturer can source and control the required jersey, rib, thread, and trims. Ask for composition, knit structure, weight, finish, usable width, shrinkage, stretch and recovery, availability, minimums, and substitute rules. Review physical swatches. A supplier should be able to explain how the material supports the fit and decoration rather than offering one generic T-shirt fabric.

Evaluate pattern, fit, and grading control

Evaluate pattern, fit, grading, and measurement control. Share a tech pack or reference sample, then inspect shoulder, chest, length, sleeve, armhole, neckline, rib, balance, and tolerance. Ask how comments are versioned and how measurements are checked during production. A strong sample process turns the design into repeatable instructions rather than depending on one skilled operator.

Review printing and embroidery evidence

Review examples of the printing or embroidery required for the project. Screen print, transfers, embroidery, and other applications need different setup and quality controls. Approve artwork size, color, placement, hand feel, and appearance on the proposed fabric. Ask how decoration is checked across sizes and how misalignment, ink problems, heat marks, or stitch defects are handled.

Use sampling as a capability test

Use sampling as a capability test. Look at communication, technical questions, measurement accuracy, seam quality, neckline recovery, fabric behavior, decoration, labels, packing, and care performance. Give consolidated written comments and check the revision against them. A supplier who cannot control the sample is unlikely to solve the same problems automatically during a larger order.

Compare complete quotations

Compare quotations that cover the same scope. Separate sample fees, patterns, fabric, trims, decoration setup, labels, packaging, testing, production, inspection, freight, duties, and payment charges. Confirm whether minimums apply per style, color, artwork, or total order. Ask for a stage-based schedule with assumptions so price is not being compared independently from material, quality, or timing.

Score communication and production control

Score technical response, sample execution, quality controls, communication, commercial clarity, and risk handling. Verify important certifications or references when they affect the buying decision.
