Define the activity and product use
Start by defining the activity, climate, customer, fit, and product role. Running tops, compression leggings, gym shorts, cycling pieces, tracksuits, and lifestyle activewear require different levels of stretch, recovery, coverage, ventilation, support, and pocket security. A manufacturer can only demonstrate relevant capability when the enquiry identifies how the garment will be worn and what performance matters.
Evaluate performance material knowledge
Ask for material proposals with fiber content, knit structure, weight, stretch direction, recovery, opacity, surface, finish, care, and availability. The supplier should explain why a fabric suits the intended product rather than offering a generic performance material. Review physical swatches and test the proposed color and finish, since stretch, coverage, hand feel, and decoration behavior can change between qualities and lots.
Check fit, movement, and grading
Activewear fit should be checked in motion. Evaluate waist stability, rise, inseam, armhole comfort, compression, coverage, grading, and whether seam lines remain comfortable during the intended activity. Request a clear measurement chart with tolerances and record fit comments against the same sample version. A good-looking static sample is not enough when movement changes stress, opacity, or comfort.
Review seams, elastic, and pocket construction
Construction evidence should match the product. Review seam extension, reinforcement, elastic attachment, gussets, panel alignment, pocket security, zipper installation, and edge finishes. The selected stitches and threads must accommodate the material and movement. Ask how the factory controls skipped stitches, seam damage, puckering, twisting, and inconsistent elastic during production rather than relying only on a final visual inspection.
Match branding to performance fabrics
Branding should be tested on the real performance fabric. Sublimation may suit compatible polyester products, while transfers, screen applications, and embroidery have different limitations around stretch, heat, weight, and placement. Approve artwork size across the required size range and document colors, backing, position, and acceptable appearance. A rigid decoration can undermine an otherwise functional garment.
Use testing and sampling as evidence
Use sampling and testing as evidence. Relevant checks can include stretch recovery, opacity, perspiration colorfastness, abrasion, pilling, seam extension, and repeated-wash behavior, depending on product and market. Confirm which tests are required, who performs them, and how failures are corrected and retested. Keep reports, swatches, measurements, artwork, and approvals tied to the same style version.
Compare the complete production proposal
Compare complete proposals rather than unit prices alone. Review sample quality, technical responses, material access, minimums, quote inclusions, production controls, schedule assumptions, payment terms, packing, and shipping.
