How to Start a Fitness Clothing Line

Plan a fitness clothing line from customer and activity through product range, tech packs, performance fabrics, sampling, testing, MOQ, costing, and launch quantities.

How to Start a Fitness Clothing Line Step By Step Guide

Choose a customer and activity

Choose a specific customer and activity before choosing products. A line for strength training, running, yoga, team sports, or everyday athleisure will need different fits, materials, features, and price points. Define when the product is used, what buyers dislike about current options, and which problem the first collection solves. This prevents the range from becoming a collection of unrelated gym-wear ideas.

Build a focused opening range

Build a small opening range with clear roles. One hero product, one supporting top, and one coordinated bottom are easier to develop and communicate than a large assortment. Share materials or colors where this supports the concept, but do not force different activities into one fabric. Estimate quantity by style, color, and size so sampling and quotations reflect a realistic first order.

Create product specifications and tech packs

Prepare a tech pack or controlled specification for every style. Include drawings, measurements, grading direction, materials, panels, seams, elastic, pockets, closures, artwork, labels, packaging, and care information. Mark fixed requirements separately from areas where you want manufacturer recommendations. Version numbers and dated comments help the pattern, sample, production, and inspection teams work from the same information.

Choose materials for movement and coverage

Choose fabric around movement, coverage, climate, and care. Review composition, construction, weight, stretch, recovery, opacity, surface, ventilation, and finish together. Request swatches and test the intended color because dark, light, and printed versions may behave differently under stretch. Avoid using broad terms such as moisture-wicking without defining the evidence required for any customer-facing performance claim.

Sample, fit, and test the products

Sample the products and test them during their intended activity. Check fit, movement, compression, coverage, seam comfort, waistband or elastic stability, pocket security, decoration, and wash behavior. Record comments against measurements and photographs, then close each issue before bulk approval. A final approved sample should represent the standard that production teams and inspectors will use.

Plan MOQ, costing, and production timing

Plan the full cash requirement, not only unit cost. Include design, tech packs, patterns, samples, material minimums, decoration setup, labels, packaging, testing, production, inspection, freight, duties, payment charges, marketing, and returns. KNAPMOD currently accepts projects from 50 pieces, with typical production of 14 days at that MOQ after approvals and material readiness. Larger quantities require a tailored lead time.

Prepare a controlled first launch

Prepare launch content while production is controlled: accurate photography, size guidance, fabric and care information, delivery expectations, and support answers. Begin with quantities that can be sold and replenished responsibly. Track sell-through and returns by style, size, and color, then use that evidence for the next order instead of adding products before the first range has produced useful customer feedback.
