The lowest unit price is only useful when the offers cover the same garment and the same responsibilities. A quote can be cheaper because it excludes labels, assumes a different fabric, uses fewer print locations or starts from a larger quantity. None of those differences is necessarily wrong, but each needs to be visible.

Before choosing a clothing manufacturing partner, send one controlled specification to your shortlist. Record every alternative a supplier proposes. This guide gives you a comparison structure without inventing a universal factory price for garments that have different requirements.

Freeze the product brief used for comparison

Give the brief a revision name and date. Include the garment drawing, measurement chart, material direction, colour references, artwork, trims, labels and packing. State which details are mandatory and which are open for development.

If a supplier proposes an alternative fabric or construction, ask for that to be quoted as an identified option. Keep it separate from the original specification. Otherwise, a useful cost-saving suggestion can quietly become the assumed standard across your comparison.

Compare quantities at the same level

List units by style, colour and size, not only the total collection. Establish whether the quoted unit is one garment, one pair or one set. Confirm any size-related price differences and whether the offer depends on using the same material across several styles.

For a small first order, review minimum-order planning. KNAPMOD's general starting minimum is 50 pieces, but the specific split and component requirements are confirmed with the quotation. Fifty pieces spread across unrelated designs should not be assumed equivalent to fifty of one agreed design.

Build a like-for-like cost table

Use a separate column for each offer and mark anything that has not been confirmed.

Cost or conditionInformation to request
Unit priceCurrency, unit definition and approved quantity
MaterialsComposition, fabric weight direction and named substitutions
SamplingDevelopment charge, revisions and shipping of samples
DecorationMethod, placements, colours and setup charges
Labels and packingIncluded components and any separate minimums
DeliveryWhat destination or handover point the price covers
PaymentMilestones and conditions recorded in writing
ValidityHow long the quotation remains open

Do not fill missing cells with assumptions. An unanswered freight or sample-cost question is a reason to clarify the offer, not evidence that the cost is zero.

Separate development from repeat production

First-order development may involve pattern work, grading, artwork preparation and sampling. Ask what is included, what belongs to a later revision, and what can be reused for a reorder. Do not assume a sample payment automatically includes ownership or delivery of every development file.

Discuss the specification records you will receive and the references retained for future orders. If your product is already developed, explain which usable files and approved samples you can supply. A supplier working from complete specifications is quoting a different task from one developing a garment from a photograph.

Ask what starts the production schedule

A production estimate needs a starting condition. Confirm whether it begins after deposit, material receipt, artwork approval, sample approval, or another agreed milestone. Ask which unresolved decisions could move the start date.

Separate sampling, bulk work and transport in your plan. Tell suppliers when the goods must arrive and where. Do not compare one supplier's sewing duration with another supplier's delivered schedule as though they measure the same period.

Clarify delivery and inspection responsibilities

Identify the delivery terms and named handover location in writing. Ask who arranges freight and which party handles customs clearance, duties and taxes. Rates and obligations depend on the destination and agreed arrangement; confirm them with the relevant logistics adviser rather than applying a generic percentage.

Agree how the finished order will be checked against the sample and specification. Record tolerances, inspection timing and the process for resolving a discrepancy before it occurs. The garment quality checklist can help organise the questions, but the purchase agreement must define the actual order conditions.

Use the answers to select a partner

Look for clear exclusions, traceable sample revisions and answers that address your garment. A detailed offer is easier to evaluate than broad claims about unbeatable prices or unlimited customisation. Keep a record of unresolved points and close them before committing to bulk production.

Ask for a revised quotation when the design, quantity or delivery scope changes. Comparing an outdated offer with a current one creates a false saving. Both you and the manufacturer should be able to identify which brief and commercial terms govern the order.

Key Takeaways

Compare the same specification, quantities and delivery scope. Separate development from production, identify missing costs and confirm what starts the schedule. Send your brief through KNAPMOD's manufacturing quote form to discuss the exact work your collection needs.
